A bit about Grade 6 by: Gali Gordon

This is Gali Gordon and I am a Grade 6 teacher at BJEP. It is great to be here as a part of this wonderful program. A little about me: I’m a freshman here and I originally hail all the way from Natick. I studied in the Natick Public School system from grades K-8 (Where one of my students has my old history teacher!) and switched to Gann Academy-The New Jewish High School of Greater Boston. Learning that I would be at Brandeis in the fall, long time family friend Nancy Fried-Tanzer and then BJEP family education coordinator suggested I check out BJEP. It’s hard to believe that the first semester coming to a close!

What makes BJEP so unique is the many hands-on projects we do. Just a few weeks ago, the grade 6 students and their parents came together to finish the making of tallitot (prayer shawls). Back in art a few weeks earlier ,all the 6th graders had tie-died blank tallitot. This was a fun activity enjoyed by all! After the parents were kind enough to wash out all the dye, the 6th grade community came together to tie the tzitzit, or fringes on to the end of the tallitot. As most of us had never done this before, there were many nervous children and parents who didn’t know what to expect. An hour later, these same children and parents were thrilled, having followed the directions and gotten the hang of it (especially by the time they had put tziztit on the 4th and last corner of the tallit) I can’t wait to see the children wearing the tallitot this upcoming March when we come together for a short service and our Legacy program.

Hag Orim Sameach חג אורים שמח!
Happy Hannukah!

I look forward to another great semester!
