Teaching Israel at BJEP – by Rebecca Pollack

Hi this is Rebecca, I teach 5th grade at BJEP. I am a Junior preparing to embark on a semester abroad in London! (But of course with a stop in Israel on the way!) I study art history and gender studies here at Brandeis (with a little Judaic studies thrown in the mix). I went to Jewish day school my entire life and spent a gap year engaging in intensive Jewish studies in Jerusalem) I love teaching at BJEP and engaging in Jewish learning with the students and fellow teachers.

In 5th grade we learn about Israel, Zionism, and Israeli culture. I have spent a lot of time in Israel and have taught this type of material in the past. Israeli history can be so much fun! There are so many themes that are intrical to Judasim and being a modern Jew. In 5th grade so far we have learned about the meaning behind the Israeli flag, the national anthem- Hatikvah, looked at some Israeli art, early history of the state (such as the maapilim- Jews who snuck in in the dead of night to escape Europe in the 1930s and early 40s). We have also learned about some Israeli Giborim, or heroes, such as David ben Gurion (first Prime Minister), Theodore Herzl (father of Zionism), and Golda Meir (a great female prime minister who led the country in times of need).

The other week we had our family program where the 5th grade students and their parents were able to “meet” and engage with these Israeli giborim and learn a little bit about Israeli history as well! We participated in activities with Herzl, ben Gurion, Meir, and Eliezer ben Yehuda (who developed modern Hebrew) and Naomi Shemer (famous singer and composer known for the song “Jerusalem of Gold.”)

When meeting these heroes we learned Israeli geography, the origins of modern Hebrew words, and sang some great songs. The program tied together through dreams. Herzl said, “Im tirzu ein zo agada” “If you will it, it is no dream.” Each of our heroes shared their dreams with the students and parents. We had a great time and cannot wait to continue learning more about Israeli history and culture!
