BJEP (Boston-area Jewish Education Program) is an independent, unaffiliated, parent-cooperative Sunday school serving 200 students, from grades one through seven, and their families. Classes meet once a week on Sunday mornings from 9:30 AM to 12:00 noon on the campus of Brandeis University. BJEP students come from communities throughout the Boston area.The school provides a warm atmosphere that encourages questioning and exploration. The teachers are undergraduate Brandeis students who are active participants in various aspects of Jewish life on campus. BJEP follows the Brandeis and public schools calendars.
BJEP was founded in 1967 by a group of Brandeis faculty members. Although the school meets on the Brandeis campus, it is independent of the University. The school is organized and funded by the parents of students enrolled in the school, and is governed by a volunteer Parent Board of Directors.The Board deals with areas such as educational philosophy, curriculum, budgeting, admissions policy, and adult education. Board meetings are open to all parents.
The Board hires an Educational Director, who is responsible for hiring staff and implementing the Board’s educational guidelines, and for the day-to-day operation of the school. The director is also responsible for supervising and supporting all faculty.
