Reading Rainbow

The Reading Rainbow helps with Hebrew practice for students going into grades 3 through 7.

Please help your child hold on to this rainbow and completely fill it out in order to get a prize when BJEP starts again in the fall. For every 15 minutes of Hebrew that your child reads (ideally, 15 minutes a week for 12 weeks), your child gets to color in a section of the rainbow — reaching the pot of gold upon completion of all 12 sections.  Please make sure to initial each section after your child completes the reading.

Here are some suggested Reading Rainbow activities:

  • Read from your Hebrew textbook, BJEP Siddur, or Gates of Prayer.
  • Practice reading and writing the alef-bet.
  • Check out www.behrmanhouse.com to practice Hebrew reading.  It is easy to get a family account and then your kids can practice their Hebrew on their own through fun games and exercises.
  • Make a project using Hebrew letters.*
  • Review some of the prayers your teachers taught you (older students); Can you remember any tunes? Listen to the recording on our BJEP website.  Record your own recordings!
  • Sing Hebrew holiday songs.
  • Write Hebrew vocabulary words that you know; make short sentences if you can.
  • Get together with a friend or classmate and write a little Hebrew skit or story.  It does not need to be perfect.
  • Or think of your own ways to practice — experiment and have fun!

*Extra credit for any student who teaches his or her parent, who did not previously know how, to read Hebrew…and a surprise for the parent who learned!
